The new HF – UHF Dual Frequency Label
combines 3 Identification Solutions

At LOGIMAT 2025, herpa print and herpa tech will present a hybrid RFID label that combines the advantages of UHF and HF technology (NFC technology). The name of the new product is "Dual Frequency Label". The special feature of this dual frequency label is that the programming of both frequencies on the chip and the printing of the label, e.g. with a barcode or QR code, are carried out in a single operation.

Why is herpa tech driving this product innovation?

We are a small medium-sized company that carries out innovative development work, especially in the field of identification solutions, RFID labels, printing technology and special printing processes. We are known for special solutions and innovations. With the increasing importance of hybrid labels, it was important to us to offer a UHF-HF dual frequency label that is efficient in production and printing. We are not the only company to offer such a label, but we have managed to program both frequencies (HF and UHF) in one operation with an RFID thermal transfer printer.

What are the advantages of the Dual Frequency Label?

The new HF – UHF combination label combines 3 identification solutions: barcode / 2D code readable by mobile phone or imager, NFC reading with NDEF formats for close range readable with any NFC-enabled smartphone or iPhone and UHF reading with bulk detection for the long distance, e.g. at the picking station. Dual Frequency Labels have been on the market for about 2 years and are now also available in new interesting formats. What is new about the label we have developed is that we convert the chips and other components of the label in such a way that both frequencies can then be printed and programmed in a single step using the thermal transfer process. This means significant time savings for our customers, especially in logistics, industry or in the pharmaceutical & medical sector. In addition, the label now offers the possibility of being read by mobile phone, which is a great advantage for inspection, service and maintenance documentation, for example.

For which applications is the Dual Frequency Label particularly suitable?

By programming and printing at the same time, the stored RFID data and the visible information on the label are always in sync. Serial numbers or product names stored in the barcode and printed on the visible side of the label will exactly match the data stored on the RFID chip at the same time.

All solutions that use an NFC application together with a UHF application are optimized by the new Dual Frequency Label. To give an example from the field of counterfeit protection, because the information is both on the chip and physically, it is more difficult to counterfeit or manipulate the product. The product is therefore highly interesting for the pharmaceutical industry or for the luxury goods industry. Employees and customers can identify the product both visually and digitally (via RFID readers), allowing for double control. This is especially convenient for warehouse or retail applications, as the information is readable by both humans and machines. But also in areas where fast and reliable service or maintenance documentation is possible via smartphone.
